Covid-19 and Forever Foreigner Syndrome

The Associated Press, an independent journalism source, posted an article titled "From guns to GoPros, Asian Americans seek to deter attacks" on April 24, 2020.  This article details the response of Asian Americans to what the AP refers to as the second epidemic: hate.  Since the start of the Covid-19 virus in Wuhan, China, Asian Americans have been the target of countless xenophobic attacks.  As a result, the AP shares that some Asian Americans have taken to arming themselves with GoPro cameras and weapons to protect themselves from racist aggressors when they leave their houses.

The Covid-19 virus has increased the effects of what the course reading refers to as forever foreigner syndrome.  This phenomena refers to how Asian Americans are forever considered foreigners on United State soil, regardless of if they were born in America and/or are American citizens. American society treats Asian Americans as others. Forever foreigner syndrome is propped up by the media and our nation's leaders.  For example, President Donald Trump's terming of Covid-19 as the 'China Virus' has fueled the racist attacks on Asian Americans.
The video "What Kind of Asian are you?" by Ken Tanaka satirically highlights one of the daily struggles that Asian Americans experience as a result of forever syndrome every day.
